inter.action: a participatory project

Materials laid out at Studio Lab Gallery for the New Glasgow version of this project. The yarn we’re using is from the Vancouver version of the show in 2017. Cushions are for participants to sit on for a break.

inter.action runs from March 5-30 at Studio Lab Gallery in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia.

inter.action is a project that utilizes the gallery space to create a participatory, ephemeral yarn installation between myself and members of the public.

This project was first staged in Vancouver, in my hometown, as a way to meaningfully re-connect face-to-face with friends and acquaintances. In this phase of the project in New Glasgow, I seek to connect with strangers in an effort to build a new network, one person at a time.

Through one-on-one, or two-on-one participation with the artist (me) we will build on the existing yarn installation, which will be initiated with a friend of mine. Our materials are yarn and pins and our canvas are the walls and the floor. Each session is up to 1 hour long. As the project progresses, the exhibition space will evolve as participants add to, or modify, the installation.

inter.action is about…making time for conversation face-to-face, engaging with strangers, connecting, speaking and listening, feeling a sense of belonging and re-imagining the gallery space as a place for encounters.

Absolutely no experience required. Any teen or adult can participate. Only one or two people can participate during a timeslot.

inter.action: March 5 – 30, 2019 (I will be sharing the gallery space with artist Janet Wallace who will be showing her work at the front of the gallery)

My first participant, Pam, who is a friend, helped to get things started so we have something visual for the opening.
