Knife Skills in the Gallery (2023)

Knife Skills in the Gallery, 2023
performed at The Anna Leonowens Gallery, Halifax, NS

Materials: People, tables, tablecloths, knives, kitchen towels, cutting boards, vegetables, etc.

Knife Skills in the Gallery is a workshop (June 8, 2023, 12-1PM) but it is also a work that comments on the use and feel of the gallery space and its potential. How can the gallery space be reimagined today?

By sharing non-art skills in the gallery, I invite friends and the general public to enter the space in the form of a gathering, to interact with me and participants, to learn and share tips with each other for use in the kitchen—a private space of the everyday—and to make the gallery space more welcoming. It’s a mashup of the private, public, and the workshop and how we behave in each space. The gathering is the work.

Workshop Description
In this hands-on workshop you will learn some knife skills and kitchen tips. Laura will show you how to efficiently chop and mince an onion and a clove of garlic and how to chop a pepper without creating a mess of seeds. Come and share your kitchen tips and recipe suggestions for these ingredients. We’ll make a Pico de Gallo (a fresh salsa) to snack on at the end.

Maximum of 10 participants.
What to bring: a cutting board and a knife you use to chop vegetables at home
Cost: free

How do you invite new people into your life…in an ever complex world? (2025)
