One-of-a-kind 3-inch pocket mirrors. One side is a mirror, the other side is a collage.

In the Vancouver Series, I use my own photography of the city often playing with the idea of a vanishing Vancouver. As buildings and landmarks are demolished, new architecture takes its place often without a trace of the history of the previous building. I wonder what we loose when this happens?

Another objective in this work is to assign worth and beauty and to elicit curiosity about some of the places depicted which currently do not have a good reputation.

The collage pocket mirror is also a vehicle for art appreciation that takes art out of the gallery and into the public sphere. In this format as functional object, it is easier for the prospective purchaser to consider the object for ownership. The work of art on the flip side provides added value (or maybe it’s the mirror that provides added value) and so plays into the customer’s purchasing psychology.

Pictured here are:

  • The Balmoral Hotel on Hastings Street
  • The Kitsilano Showboat stage at Kitsilano Beach
  • Quest & Russell signage on a building on Clark and Venables
  • An old Esso gas station in the downtown East Side
  • One of the corners of East Hastings and Main Street
  • A detail on Clark Drive (maybe)
