send mail art not christmas cards

When I started the 5-minute collage experiment, I was inspired to create a bunch of mail art and to send it to some family and friends. Up to now, I had only been responding to calls for mail art  exhibitions and to calls from individuals with personal projects.

I thought it’d be fun to send mail art to people you see in your life and also I was thinking how neat it would be to send mail art instead of Christmas cards–after all, I don’t celebrate Christmas. Sending mail art to someone you see in person is interesting because it adds a new way of communicating. I prefer communicating with small works of art and a bit of text rather than writing letters.

So, here is what I sent out recently…not postcards but cards with the front and back decorated and slipped into an envelope. With some, I made the envelopes myself. You can easily find envelope templates online. For all of these, I used recipe cards from Michaels Recollections brand (sorry, I can’t find the exact product online). I like the tab that sticks out of the cards.

In this card, I used a ticket that my friend had received when visiting the Van Gosh Museum.

In this card, I used a ticket that my friend had received when visiting the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. She had sent me her ticket to use in my work, so I thought mail art was a great place for it. I like how I incorporated the words ‘new beginning,’ (something I had lying around) given the time of the year.

The image of the man is from a Camilla Engman calendar from a few years back. I've been saving the calendar because I like Camilla's work but working with her images is more inspiring than keeping them hidden and forgotten. I'm not selling this work, so I feel OK to use another artist's image.

I’m not selling this work, so I feel OK to play with another artist’s image.

Again, the image of the woman is from a Camilla Engman calendar.

Again, the image of the woman above is from a Camilla Engman calendar. I really like how this card turned out. I used Italian here–a sentence cut out from a book, and some fabric (the flower shape)…

I think of the person I am making the card for and things emerge that feel right.

When someone’s work is an inspiration, it can be useful to think what about it inspires you. As I was working with Camilla’s images, I realized I like her simple line drawings and it occurred to me that I ought to try draw a few figures in her style and see what comes out. This might be a theme for 5-minute collages for one week.

A look back at November

November was all about finishing projects for the Textile Design course I am taking at the University of British Columbia. This course will pick up again in January. It’s lots of fun. One of the new techniques for me in the course was silk painting. You can see some silk stretched over a frame below. We used a wax resist (prevent the paint to spread to parts of the design) to draw out our design and then we started painting. I haven’t finished mine yet. I often take pictures in class–it’s great to be able to do this. Here’s a mosaic collage from my Instagram photos for the month.

A look back at October

October was very busy, and all about deadlines that I met! Here’s a mosaic collage from my Instagram photos.

What inspires you?

art journaling - somerset stdio

Yesterday I picked up the Summer issue of Art Journaling (never too late), a magazine published by Somerset Studio. It’s full of great tips and inspiring art journal pages! Have a peak at what’s inside here. I picked it up at Bird on A Wire on Main & Broadway in Vancouver–this is a wonderful gallery store focused on local arts and crafts.

I also dropped off the last of my limited edition hand screenprinted journals. You can see the selection on my portfolio pages but they’re only available to buy at Bird on a Wire.

You know, I was thinking I need to get into that magazine! Wouldn’t it be great to see your art on such a wonderful magazine? I’m off to read their submission guidelines.

Something for you

Happy Valentine! Something beautiful for you to look at. If no one is buying you flowers, why not treat yourself to a beautiful bouquet and then photograph it, draw it, paint it.

old stamped envelopes

A few weeks ago, I went to an antique fair and picked up a collection of stamped envelopes, some matchboxes, a great wooden Coca-Cola crate, and a set of 6 shot glasses from the 60s.

Here’s a US envelope and some Danish stamps. I wonder if these will be inspiration for new work. I’ll share more each week. Do you collect anything?

inspiring quotes

Quote by Michel Shea on Creativity

These days I always try to start my studio time by doing something personally creative that has nothing to do with business. Sometimes I take 15 minutes and other times 1 hour. This morning I came across this quote in The Artist Way book, “Creativity is…seeing something that doesn’t exist already. You need to find out how to bring it into being…” by Michele Shea. The quote actually continued “…and that way be a playmate with God.” That last bit didn’t speak to me, so I left it out.

I used a page from a scrapbook stack that you buy at the store and did an image transfer of the quote. It is good to be reminded that you need to work on creativity if you want to be creative.
